Fantastic Year Ahead!
September 10, 2012
We are going to have a fantastic year! I am so pleased at how well this class
has adjusted to the new routines. Thank-you for making sure your child brings
his/her agenda each day. It makes it so much easier for daily
communication.
Home readingstarted today. Each student has a special reading bag and a
‘reading log’. Each book that they read can be written down in this log. The books
they will be bringing home are very simple books, with predictable text. Have fun
reading! If the books are too hard or easy, please let me know. Reading should
be FUN!
We will be starting our reading program this week. The following programs are part of our
Language Arts program:
Animated Literacy - We will be reviewing the letters and letter sounds as well as
combining letters to make simple words and simple
sentences.
Words their Way - We will be working on establishing Word Sort routines with simple
pictures sorts.
Guided Reading - Right now we are working on becoming familiar with the Learning
Center routines and I am assessing student reading levels.
Spelling – We will start this later when the students are able to read some
sight words with confidence.
Writing – We write every day. Please send a 3 ring binder to collect your child’s
writing. It does not need to be new.
In Math we are learning about patterns, making number sentences (e.g. 1 +
1 = 2), showing numbers in different ways and reviewing the numbers to
10.
In Social Studies we are
working on cooperation and ‘green behavior’. Our beginning unit is ‘Belonging in
my World.’ Our class is working hard to learn the ‘7
Habits for Being GREEN’.
In Science we are learning
about the: senses, colours, and Fall.
Our library day is Thursday.
Each student will be given a library bag that they can keep their library books in which makes it easier to keep them separate from their
home reading books.
Show and Share will start this week. Please check the Show and Share sheet I sent
home last week to see what day is your child’s day to bring something in to
share with the class.
School Photos are next Tuesday – September 18th.
Wednesday, September 19th from 5:30-7:00 in the evening we are having a Meet and Greet Night.
It is a great opportunity ask questions and find out about the learning expectations for grade one, as well as
a chance to meet the other grade one parents.
