School Art Project & Terry Fox Run
September 24th
Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend the Meet and Greet night last week. I have sent home the information booklet to those parents who were unable to attend. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
I am sending home a sound/word sort with your child. They need to practice sorting the
words into groups that begin with the same sound (or match the picture to the word).
We are working on these at school.
We are also working on learning the letters and letter sounds using the Animated Literacy Program. Your child will be bringing
home alphabet pages to share with you.
Show and share letter - C
Tuesday at noon will be our monthly assembly.
Friday we will have two special activities in
the afternoon.
1) Terri-Fox Run will be held at 2:30pm
2) Arts Day - Sidewalk Chalk Art
Activity @ 12:42pm.
If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call or stop in to see me.
Have a great week.

Photo Day This Week
September 17th
What an awesome group of
students!!! This is going to be an
amazing year.
The new sounds are: x, a, d, t
Show and Share: B
School photos are tomorrow (Tuesday).
Please plan to attend the Meet and Greet Night on Wednesday night. I look forward to seeing
you! It is a great night to learn about grade one, ask questions and meet new people.
Please send a 3 ring binder if you have not done so already.
Library class is on Wednesday. They will go every Wednesday, return their books and choose 2 more.
I have sent home a sheet with your child’s name printed on it. Please encourage them to practice printing
their name using a capital letter for the first letter of their name, and lowercase letters for the rest.
We will be painting this year and an old shirt is a good way to protect your child’s clothes from becoming stained. If you wish, you may send one which I will keep here at school until the end of the school year.
If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call or stop in to see me.
Have a great week.

September 10, 2012
We are going to have a fantastic year! I am so pleased at how well this class
has adjusted to the new routines. Thank-you for making sure your child brings
his/her agenda each day. It makes it so much easier for daily
communication.
Home reading started today. Each student has a special reading bag and a ‘reading
log’. Each book that they read can be written down in this log. The books they
will be bringing home are very simple books, with predictable text. Have fun reading!
If the books are too hard or easy, please let me know. Reading should be FUN!
We will be starting our reading program this week. The following programs are part of our Language
Arts program:
Animated Literacy - We will be reviewing the letters and letter sounds as well as
combining letters to make simple words and simple
sentences.
Words their Way - We will be working on establishing Word Sort routines with simple
pictures sorts.
Guided Reading - Right now we are working on becoming familiar with the Learning
Center routines and I am assessing student reading
levels.
Spelling – We will start this later when the students are able to read some
sight words with confidence.
Writing – We write every day. Please send a 3 ring binder to collect your child’s
writing. It does not need to be
new.
In Math we are learning about patterns, making number sentences (e.g. 1 + 1 = 2), showing numbers in different ways and reviewing the numbers to 10.
In Social Studies we are working on cooperation and ‘green behavior’. Our beginning unit is ‘Belonging in
my World.’ Our class is working hard to learn the ‘7 Habits for Being GREEN’.
In Science we are learning about the: senses, colours, and Fall.
Our library day is Wednesday. Each student will be given a library bag that they can keep
their library books in which makes it easier to keep them separate from their home reading books.
Book orders are due back Friday.
School Photos are next Tuesday – September 18th.
Wednesday, September 19th from 5:30-7:00 in the evening we are having a Meet and Greet Night.
It is a great opportunity ask questions and find out about the learning expectations for grade one, as well as
a chance to meet the other grade one parents.
